SUNNYVALE, CA --JANUARY 13, 1999--AMD today announced availability of the low-power Mobile AMD-K6®-2 processor family for notebook computers. With a top speed of 333 MHz, these CPUs enter the market as the highest clock speed mobile processors. The Mobile AMD-K6-2, also available at 300 and 266 MHz, is the first PC processor for notebook computing that uses AMD's innovative 3DNow!(TM) technology to offer an excellent 3D graphics and superior visual computing experience to mobile PC users.
The Mobile AMD-K6-2 processor supports existing low-cost Socket 7 notebook designs, as well as Super7(TM) platforms that offer advanced features including a high-performance 100-MHz frontside bus and AGP graphics. Mobile Super7 chipset support is available from leading third-party suppliers including ALi and VIA.
"With the introduction of the Mobile AMD-K6-2 processor family, AMD continues to set new standards of performance for the price in PC processors," said S. Atiq Raza, AMD co-chief operating officer and chief technical officer. "The Mobile AMD-K6-2 products will build on the success we achieved in the notebook market during 1998 with the original Mobile AMD-K6, and brings a number of firsts to the notebook PC, including support for a 100-MHz frontside bus and our innovative 3DNow! technology enhancements."
Toshiba, the world's leading notebook PC manufacturer, has announced the Satellite 2520 with the 300-MHz Mobile AMD-K6-2 processor, 64 megabytes of RAM, a 12.1-inch active matrix display, 4.3-gigabyte hard drive and 24X CD-ROM drive. This system is available immediately to Toshiba's commercial and retail customers in Japan.
About The Mobile AMD-K6®-2 Processor Family
The Mobile AMD-K6-2 processors operate at a core voltage of 1.8 Volts
and dissipate less than 8 Watts of power running typical applications. This
allows system vendors to offer notebooks with longer battery life and smaller,
thinner form factors while retaining excellent performance.
AMD's new mobile processors are available in Socket 7-compatible, 321-pin ceramic PGA packages or BGA packages for smaller form factors.
All AMD-K6-2 processors deliver leading-edge, sixth-generation performance for today's demanding Microsoft® Windows® compatible home and office applications. These 9.3-million-transistor processors are manufactured on AMD's 0.25-micron, five-layer-metal process technology at AMD's Fab 25 wafer fabrication facility in Austin, Texas.
About 3DNow!(TM) Technology
3DNow! technology is the first innovation to the x86 processor architecture
that significantly enhances 3D graphics, multimedia, and other floating
point-intensive PC applications to enable a superior visual computing experience.
AMD is the first PC processor manufacturer to offer 3D instruction enhancements
for the mobile PC market. 3DNow! is a set of 21 instructions that use SIMD
(Single Instruction Multiple Data) and other performance enhancements that
can open the performance bottleneck in the 3D graphics pipeline between
the host CPU and the 3D graphics accelerator.
Pricing and Availability
The 333-MHz Mobile AMD-K6-2 processor is priced at $299. Pricing for
the 300-MHz Mobile AMD-K6-2 processor begins at $187. The 266-MHz Mobile
AMD-K6-2 processor is priced at $106. All pricing is based on 1000-unit
