INTEL FINALLY LAUNCHES ITS LONG-PROMISED PENTIUM OVERDRIVE CHIP
(February 3rd 1995) Intel unveiled its first Pentium Overdrive
processor last week. The processor upgrade brings Pentium processor
technology to Intel 80486-based systems. It is based on the 3.3 Volt
0.6 micron technology of the Pentium and features superscaler
architecture, branch prediction and the faster maths co-processor,
along with a larger 32kB cache, 32-bit bus interface, on-package
voltage regulator and new on-package fan and heat sink. It upgrades
most 50MHz SX2, DX2 and 25MHz 80486 processor-based systems, and
operates at 63MHz. A second version will upgrade 66MHz 80486DX2 and
33MHz 80486 processor-based systems. This version, which runs at 83MHz,
will be available later in the year. Intel says it has also reduced the
prices on its current range of Overdrive processors. Meanwhile, P6 is
near to sampling, we hear.
