SUNNYVALE, CA--NOVEMBER 13, 1996--AMD today announced it has commenced sampling of its sixth-generation Microsoft® Windows®-compatible PC microprocessor, code-named the AMD-K6(TM) processor, to key development partners.
AMD's new processor is designed to deliver performance competitive with Pentium Pro for the Windows 95 and Windows NT(TM) operating systems. The sixth-generation AMD-K6 processor provides high performance running both 16-bit and 32-bit software, and executes multimedia extension (MMX) instructions.
The AMD-K6 processor is designed to maintain Socket 7 system bus and electrical compatibility. Socket 7 compatibility will enable PC manufacturers and resellers to speed time to market and deliver high-performance sixth-generation systems at an affordable cost by taking advantage of existing fifth-generation system designs and infrastructure.
The AMD-K6 processor uses AMD's 0.35-micron 5-layer metal process in AMD's Fab 25 wafer fabrication facility in Austin, Texas.
