150 MHz MediaGX Processor
Continues to Drive Rapidly Growing Sub-$1,000 PC Market
Richardson, Texas - June 6, 1997- Cyrix Corporation
today announced volume production shipment of the 150 MHz MediaGX
processor. The PC market has shown strong acceptance of this product
which enables full PC functionality at breakthrough price points
since its introduction in February 1997. The MediaGX processor,
supported by a growing number of customers and key PC infrastructure
members, incorporates multimedia and system functions right
on the CPU.
As expected, MediaGX processor
technology has sparked new growth in the emerging sub-$1,000 consumer
PC market, helping to nearly triple this segment's total share
of the U.S. retail market since January 1997, according to market
researcher Computer Intelligence.
"With the introduction
of MediaGX technology, Cyrix empowered sub-$1,000 systems and
brought multimedia PC functionality to the masses," said
Steve Tobak, vice president of corporate and channel marketing
at Cyrix. "We continue to drive frequency and feature improvements
to keep pace with end-user demand for this growing segment of
the market. Cyrix is enabling PC manufacturers to build the extremely
affordable systems consumers want without sacrificing performance
and features.
Customer Base and Growing Infrastructure
Support "The robust features of
the Cyrix MediaGX processor enable our OEM customers to deliver
a complete multimedia PC for well under $1,000," said Alonzo
Cardenas, director of marketing, BCM Advanced Research. "We,
too, recognize the tremendous growth of this segment and are pleased
that Cyrix is providing us with the means to build the products
that our OEM customers will use to reach this market."
Systems are also available from
Compaq (Presario 2120), FIC (Oasis), IBM Canada (Ambra Ispirati),
Samsung (Sens S505T-12C31) and Tatung (TNC1000).
Price and Availability About Cyrix Corporation
Since the inception of the MediaGX
processor, the technology has received strong support from motherboard
and system manufacturers. The 150 MHz version of the MediaGX processor
is incorporated in the new Compaq Presario® 2120. In addition,
BCM Advanced Research (a GVC Group subsidiary) introduced the
FM519 motherboard and ES3300 entertainment station based on the MediaGX processor in May 1997.
The 150 MHz MediaGX processor
is available now, priced at $99 each in quantities of 1,000. The
133 MHz and 120 MHz MediaGX chips are available at $88 and $60
each, respectively, in quantities of 1,000.
